Protect Your Home With Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems

March 10th, 2008

Every responsible homeowner has smoke detectors, but few wonder if this is really enough. It is true, that a house using a well-maintained smoke detector in every room is likely to detect a fire in its early stages, which greatly increases the chances of escaping safely, but for me, I want the best possible protection for my family. I had never realize that there was more to fire prevention than smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and of course a house that is up to building codes until I began my job working in a warehouse. It was only then that I noticed something that every industrial building has, but few homes do – something that can ultimately mean the difference between life and death in a fire. That something is, of course, automatic fire sprinklers.

Automatic fire sprinklers have been standard equipment in many factories, warehouses, and even in office buildings for many years, but have never quite made a complete foray into the consumer market. This is a shame, as they are such a logical extension of the smoke detector. The way that automatic fire sprinklers work is very simple. When heavy smoke is detected in a room, it sets off the sprinklers in the ceiling. These rain down a substantial amount of water – enough to quench a fire in its beginning stages, or to slow one that is more advanced.

Of course, automatic fire sprinklers do have their drawbacks which make them sort of problematic for a household environment. Having that much water raining down in a room can really put a damper on your day, so to speak. Carpets, books, clothing, and even walls can be ruined, and mildew growth can be stimulated by thoroughly soaking a room. This means that automatic fire sprinklers are not a good idea for the kitchen or adjoining rooms.

Of course, in the environment where automatic fire sprinklers are traditionally used, this is not a problem at all. Smoke in a kitchen might just mean a minor cooking accident, but smoke in a warehouse almost always spells trouble. The same goes for an office building, or a factory. In the den, the bedrooms, and many hallways, however, automatic fire sprinklers just make sense. Although they are expensive, and do not absolutely eliminate the chance of fire, a good automatic fire sprinklers system is, in my opinion worth it because it does make my family somewhat safer.

Home Security Safes

March 10th, 2008

Home security safes come in all shapes and sizes and you can implement them in the hiding place of your choice. There are floor safes that you can install underneath a bed or area rug. There are electronic and manual home security safes, and safes that are specifically designed to contain particular types of items.

For example, a data media home security safe is designed to safely store computer disks and other electronic media via controlled temperature and humidity levels. It has been shown that computer disks can deteriorate at temperatures well below 350 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the guaranteed temperature threshold for many traditional document safes.

Gun safes are the proper size for storing long fire arms, such as shotguns and are an effective way to safeguard family members from accidental firings. Gun safes are typically fire proof as well as drill-resistant and can be stored within a closet or other convenient area of your home.

Many home security safe manufacturers offer several types of custom safes in addition to the usual safe types. For example, you may wish to have floor safe equipped with electronic access or a wall safe with features typically found in floor safes, such as a pry resistant door.

If you’re interested in getting a general purpose safe you may wish to consider a larger capacity safe with various shelves as well as larger open areas within the safe compartment. This way you can store various important things, such as money, documents, cameras and other electronics.

Home Security Monitoring

March 10th, 2008

Home Security Monitoring is arguably an even more important aspect of a home security system than the sensors and what most people think of as the alarm system itself. Without proper and reliable monitoring, a home security system can be as useless as having no security system at all.

Alarm systems, the part of a home security system that alerts someone when a sensor has been triggered, can be either local or remote, or a combination of both. Local alarms are typically very loud sounds either indoor, outdoor or both. The intention of a local alarm is to scare off burglars before they penetrate your home.

Local alarm sirens have become somewhat less effective as urban citizens have become desensitized to the sound of alarms. In rural areas local alarms may be ignored by burglars altogether, as there is little chance that anyone else will hear it and call the police. For these reasons, most home security systems involve remote monitoring in addition to any type of local alarm. In my opinion it is still worth installing a local alarm, as in many cases it will indeed scare of intruders before something worse happens.

Be sure you know what kind of remote alarm service is included in any type of home security monitoring service that you’re considering. There are several different types and levels of responsiveness available from different home security monitoring companies.

Do your homework. Some of the most affordable home security monitoring services may only run automatic checks of your system a couple of times per day. These are hardly better than having only a local alarm siren. There are many helpful consumer oriented websites where you can compare the products and services of various home security companies. Once you compare and contrast the service of several different monitoring companies you’ll be better equipped to determine which level of monitoring your home requires.

Self Installed Home Security Cameras

March 10th, 2008

You can install your own home security cameras. It is affordable and easy. The representatives with Surveillance-Video.com are fantastic to work with. They will answer all of your questions patiently and thoroughly.

Home security cameras vary widely. There are complete systems available that include hidden cameras with equipment to record for 960 hours. The price for home security cameras like that runs about $615. Lower priced systems can go as low as $175. A low priced system is invariably black and white.

Professional grade home security cameras can cost a lot. I recently found a system that had six color outdoor cameras with a digital recording system. I can’t imagine who would need this type of system. I would suppose it would have to be someone extremely rich or famous.

There are good home security cameras on the market for night vision. These can be very basic all weather black and white night vision cameras or a much fancier high power wireless infrared night vision security camera that has a weatherproof design.

The fancier night vision home security cameras also work like a champion during the day because of varifocal lenses. The difference in price between night vision home security cameras can be in the neighborhood of three thousand dollars.

I’m not sure that I ever want to live where you would require the services of explosion proof home security cameras. They are available for sale, so somebody must need them.

I do think that some people need home security cameras that are vandal-proof. This is as simple as purchasing a dome camera. They have very sturdy designs to choose from and are pretty affordable.
